The certifications that determine approval

A firestop certification never certifies a tube of sealant on its own. It certifies a tested system - construction, service, gap and material together.

What is tested

UL (Underwriters Laboratories) tests a complete firestop system - the wall or floor construction, the service passing through it, the annular gap and the sealing material - in a furnace to a defined time/temperature curve, then hits it with a hose stream.

Why it matters

A UL listing is not a product certificate. It certifies a tested assembly, identified by a system number. That is why a submittal must name the system, not just the sealant. Each R-number above is a file covering a family of listed systems, and every system carries drawings that define permitted substrates, gaps, thicknesses and ratings.

On site this is what makes an installation defensible: the installed detail either matches a listed system or it does not.

FM Approved

What is tested

FM Approvals is the certification arm of an industrial property insurer. Its testing looks at loss prevention as well as life safety, including durability and installation repeatability.

Why it matters

For power generation, substations and industrial plant, FM Approval is often the line an insurer or owner's engineer draws. It signals the system holds up as an asset-protection measure, not only as a code compliance item.

03 · Third-party listing

Warnock Hersey / Intertek

Listing 20947

What is tested

Intertek's Warnock Hersey mark is an independent listing and follow-up service programme: initial fire testing plus recurring unannounced factory audits.

Why it matters

It provides a second accredited body confirming that what leaves the factory still matches what was tested. Consultants use it as corroborating evidence where a project requires more than a single certification body.

Useful where a specification calls for listings from two independent laboratories.

What is tested

Each GCC authority maintains its own register of approved firestop products and suppliers. Approval is jurisdiction-specific and time-limited.

Why it matters

International test data alone does not clear an inspection. Without a current local listing, a compliant system can still be rejected at handover.

Reading a listing

F, T, L and W - what the letters mean

A UL 1479 listing is quoted as a rating set, for example 2 hr F, 1 hr T. Specifying the wrong letter is the most common reason a certified product still fails inspection.

F rating
Time in hours the seal stops flame passage and withstands the hose stream. The baseline number a specification quotes.
T rating
Adds a 181°F (100°C) limit on temperature rise on the unexposed side. Required where combustibles sit close to the penetration.
L rating
Measured air leakage through the seal, in CFM. Matters for smoke control and pressurised stair or plant enclosures.
W rating
Certifies the seal is also a water barrier, for floor penetrations at risk of standing water.

Due diligence

How to verify a firestop certification

Five checks that separate a compliant installation from a certified product installed the wrong way.

  1. 01Ask for the system number, not the product name - a certificate without a system number proves nothing.
  2. 02Check the listing covers your substrate: concrete, blockwork, drywall and deck each test separately.
  3. 03Confirm the rating period matches the compartment rating on the fire strategy drawing, not the highest number available.
  4. 04Confirm the civil defence approval is current for the project's jurisdiction on the date of handover.
  5. 05Keep the as-built record: photographs, system number and installer, per penetration.
